Best "Church" post of the year: Is the Church Dead?

Our pastor sent this along to me today. It is the most powerful post that I've seen so far this year. So it wins my unofficial award for Best "Church" Post of the Year.

You really need to read it, but more importantly, please watch the video at the bottom.

I love the message of this post, but I really love the use of Web 2.0 to promote a deeply spiritual message. I see this post as both mission and sharing about the greatness of one's church in the hope of bring people into a fabulous community of Christ. Growing the membership of a church is a mission, too! We often forget that. We want to avoid the dreaded "E-word" or we want to quickly assume that we are only promoting the church in order to bring in more pledging members. Don't get me wrong, a few more pledging members would really help; however, bringing people into our community of Christians is what we are called to do. Besides, why wouldn't we want to share what we love about our church with others? We have an abundance of a church that is wonderfully family oriented, multi-cultural, mission oriented, age diverse, loving and caring. Shouldn't we share that wealth?

Let me know what you think.

Using The Internet to Save You Time and Make You Smarter: RSS Feeds

Information is a very valuable commodity. It is a way to learn and a way to draw people to your website. Unfortunately, information is being developed so quickly, that there is no way that you can stay on top of it all. That's to say nothing about all of the information that already exists on topics that you're interested in. To stay current, one needs to follow blogs. Blogs exist all over the place about all kinds of different topics. Following a list of individual blogs takes too much time. Smart users will use RSS feeds. This video shows you how to get set up. It mentions both Bloglines and Google Reader. I use both and find that I like Google Reader the most. You may have to first get a free Google email account.

Enjoy and feel free to ask questions.

Charles

p.s. You have to check out some of the videos at Common Craft. They are genius. Someday, I'll post on using video to get your point across. Common Craft videos are great examples of the power of a simple video

Elevator Pitches - A Concise Overview

This link is from the same Chris O'Leary as the previous link. It's not bad advice for our purposes, but one must understand that the purposes and audiences are a bit different.

Another Elevator Speech Link

This link has some good answers to Frequently Asked Questions that can certainly help in the formulation of elevator speeches:

Presbyterian Blogs

Although I am a passionate consumer of blogs, I'm relatively new at authoring them. Several months ago I came across the Presbyterian Bloggers site. You have to love a site with this subtitle:

"A community for those whose blogging is decent and in order."

The site has an enormous list of links or members of its ring. I haven't had a chance to review them. Let me know if there are some good ones that I should subscribe to.

Thanks.

Elevator Speeches, update

I'm not sure why, but the suffix was left off of the link in the previous post. It should read as:
